Aging is an inevitable process, but the rate and magnitude of the decline in physiological function may be decreased by an exercise or activity intervention. The risk of chronic disease, however, increases through the lifespan. Therefore, there is a greater need to assess the individual’s aerobic capacity, muscular strength, balance, body composition and flexibility in an effort to formulate an individualized program of exercise for the older adult. Once these factors are gathered, the individual can engage in a program of exercise.
