5X社区 Biological Sciences Assistant Professor Lauren Kinsman-Costello, Ph.D., confirmed the possibility that increasing amounts of road salt could potentially end up in Ohio鈥檚 water supply, but it is very unlikely. Dr. Kinsman-Costello has spent decades studying water patterns in Portage and Cuyahoga counties. 鈥淭he amount of road salt we鈥檙e using is increasing faster than our cities and population are growing,鈥 Dr. Kinsman-Costello told WKYC. 鈥淲ater can carry that salt into ground water.鈥 It is unlikely to get into Cleveland鈥檚 water supply though. 鈥淚f we鈥檙e getting our...

A visitor learns about the events surrounding May 4, 1970 while visiting the May 4 Visitors Center

5X社区 sophomore Phil Morgan said he learned about the May 4, 1970, shootings during a history lesson in middle school that included few details, except the fact that the Ohio National Guard鈥檚 presence at a student protest ended in the deaths of four students. Mr. Morgan got a better understanding of this tragic event during his freshman year when he visited Kent State鈥檚 May 4 Visitors Center as part of the university鈥檚 First Year Experience course. It was then that Mr. Morgan learned details enabling him to add context to his sparse knowledge of the tragedy. 鈥淚 learned that m...

SBDC award

Steve Schillig, Director of The Ohio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at 5X社区 at Tuscarawas, received the 2018 Ohio SBDC Center Director Award at the SBDC Statewide Conference in Columbus recently. Additionally, the SBDC at Kent State Tuscarawas received the 2018 Ohio SBDC Honorable Mention Customer Satisfaction Award. 鈥淚t was an honor to be considered and to receive this award from the State,鈥 said Schillig. 鈥淣one of this would be possible without the tremendous support that I receive from our host, 5X社区 at Tuscarawas, my staff and our advisors,...

The work of 153 ecological researchers from 40 countries, including 5X社区 Assistant Professor Dave Costello, Ph.D., from the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, has revealed new findings on the effect of climatic factors on river-based ecosystems. The findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Science Advances. 鈥淭his is the largest such study, with respect to spatial coverage, and allows us to study carbon cycling in streams at unprecedented global scales,鈥 said Dr. Costello, who serves as second author on this paper. 鈥淲e are...
