Reel Witness: May 4 on the Screen

This exhibition explores how filmmakers captured and shaped the memory of May 4, 1970, through two strikingly different cinematic responses: the 1981 made-for-TV movie Kent State and Richard Myers’ experimental documentary Confrontation at Kent State (1970). Juxtaposing Hollywood dramatization with underground, avant-garde film-making, the exhibition traces the challenges and urgency behind getting the story of May 4 onto film. Archival objects, scripts, production materials, and behind-the-scenes ephemera reveal the creative and political negotiations that shaped each project.
