Meet Ava Hirsch, a junior majoring in Exercise Science on a pre-Physical Therapy track, and one of Kent State鈥檚 Recreation and Wellness Services' Fitness & Wellness Services Receptionists and Specialists. For her, RecWell has been more than just a campus job, but a place that feels like home. Since January 2024, she has grown into a familiar and welcoming face for students, staff, and patrons alike.
One of Ava鈥檚 most enjoyable aspects of working in FitWell is the sense of community she鈥檚 fostered through daily interactions and getting to see the same people around campus. Recognizing familiar faces and being recognized in return has made a significant impact on her college experience. 鈥淚 see patrons on campus, and they remember my name or even ask how classes went --- I鈥檝e realized I鈥檝e made a difference as a RecWell employee,鈥 she shared. Whether she is communicating with colleagues or helping someone at the desk, Ava thrives on the connections she continues to build. Meaningful qualities of an outgoing and 鈥渂ig people person鈥.
Ava鈥檚 passion for people extends into her role as a mentor. When asked about what she admires most about her position, she includes how she enjoys helping train new student employees and supporting them as they learn the ropes. Knowing she can be someone others can turn to for questions and encouragement feels fulfilling. A large part of Ava's position involves checking in with coworkers and making sure they feel supported, which has been something she鈥檚 seen as a crucial part of the job.
Through her dedication to FitWell, Ava has developed valuable professional skills such as time management, organization, communication, and technical skills like using Excel for scheduling and fitness assessments for clients. Every experience she believes will directly help her future career in physical therapy and exercise science in general. When she is surrounded by hardworking and motivated team members who share similar interests, Ava is inspired to hold herself to a high standard and follow their example.
Outside of Recreation and Wellness Services, Ava keeps herself busy and involved on campus. She serves on the director鈥檚 board for her sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, where she helps and hosts community service events. Furthermore, she is a member of Kent State鈥檚 Honors College, and she sits on the e-board for the Pre-Physical Therapy organization on campus. Recounting her recognition as employee of the month in 2025, she鈥檚 shown that she stays committed to being both an exceptional employee and student.
The minute difficulties of balancing several commitments have taught Ava to manage her time intentionally 鈥 scheduling at least 30 minutes a day for each role and always prioritizing her academics. She emphasizes to others, especially herself, the importance of recharging and staying motivated.
Ava offers reassuring advice to new student employees: 鈥淕o out of your way to say hi to people who aren鈥檛 in your department, be confident in your abilities, and don鈥檛 be afraid to ask questions.鈥 Ava speaks from experience, explaining that consistency matters and simply asking someone how they鈥檙e doing can mean more than you realize.
Fun fact about Ava? Before coming to Kent State, Ava lived in Europe for four whole years!
