Kent State Western Equestrian Team
The Western Equestrian Team accepts riders of any skill level! We compete through Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) in Zone 6, Region 1. The Western team primarily shows in horsemanship seat classes, with reining and ranch riding open to advanced riders (determined by the team's coach & an IHSA skill level assessment).
Team meetings are held either on campus or at the team barn, usually with a virtual option offered to increase options for riders to be able to attend.
Lessons are offered through Flying K Stables at rider's own discretion. We encourage riders to lesson as frequently as they are able to, though lessons are only required in the week prior to a show. Riders schedule their lessons through the Flying K Stables website, pricing for lessons is determined by the coach.
To help make the team accessible to all riders fundraising opportunities are mandatory or riders can choose to pay a fundraising opt out fee. The team tries to fundraise to lower the out of pocket costs associated with IHSA horse shows. The team also offers shared show clothing and riding accessories, as needed, for use to help reduce any potential cost to riders at shows.
Registration requirements include: Hazing101 Certificate, KSU DoSportsEasy profile completion, and online registration through IHSA. (Online registration through IHSA to be completed with team president and/or team coach's help to assure correct membership status)
The KSU Western Equestrian Team is a club sports team open to all fulltime Kent State students! Riders of any skill level are welcomed to the team. The team shows through IHSA and rides out of Flying K Stables in Massillon, Ohio.
