Top Heater Safety Tips

As temperatures drop, heaters are sometimes used on campus.  However, improper use can lead to fire hazards, injuries, or equipment damage. ALL SPACE HEATERS MUST BE APPROVED BY University Facilities Management (UFM). In many cases the building electrical systems will not support these devices. Please enter a work order (ReADY Work Request | University Facilities Management) to request a space heater. Here are some key safety guidelines to keep everyone warm and safe:

  1. Use Approved Devices
Choose heaters with safety certifications (UL, ETL) and features like tip-over protection and automatic shut-off.  Be sure to test the 鈥渢ip-over "feature on a monthly basis.
  2. Keep Clear Space
Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance around heaters. Keep away from  curtains, papers, etc.
  3. Plug Directly into a Wall Outlet
Avoid extension cords or power strips鈥攖hey can overheat and cause fires.
  4. Never Leave Unattended
Turn off heaters  and unplug when leaving the room for the day or for the weekend.
  5. Inspect Before Use
Check cords and plugs for damage. Do not use heaters with frayed wires or cracks.
  6. Avoid Blocking Airflow
Do not place heaters under desks or behind furniture.
  7. Report Issues Immediately
If you notice sparks, strange smells, or malfunctioning heaters, contact campus maintenance or safety services right away.
  8. According to the Hallways Handbook, space heaters are not allowed in residence halls.
